Why you should use Meta Title and Meta Description Tags

Many website designers fail to use or disregard the extremely important Meta Tags:

  • Page Title
  • Page Description
  • Page Keywords

This is a serious marketing faux pas and detrimental to your business, marketing campaign and ultimately cashflow!

It is true that the major Search Engines no longer use these tags to learn about you and your services. But they do use the Title and Description Meta Tags when they display your website on a search results page. So the Title and Description Tags give you control over how you are conveyed to prospective clients.  It allows you to entice them from a search result page and hopefully get to click on your link and not your competitor.

If you do not use these tags the Search Engines will use random text off your page, it might be useful or might not. You must have seen result pages when Google shows peoples addresses or menu options in the descriptive text. Did this entice you to click on it? I bet it didn’t.

   Quote from Google Webmaster Tools:

‘While accurate meta descriptions can improve clickthrough, they won’t impact your ranking within search results. We frequently prefer to display meta descriptions of pages (when available) because it gives users a clear idea of the URL’s content.http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35624

If you or your web designer fails to fill out the Title and Description Meta Tags you wont miss out on Page Rank but you might be losing clients as they don’t click on your link!

Keywords Meta Tag

The Keywords Tags is slowly becoming an extinct function and may fall by the way side in a few years. But today it is still being used by thousands of online Business Directories. You might never get a real client form these directories, who knows who reads them, but you might get a back link. Your Keywords Meta Tag is used to categories your website to allow correct placement within the Directory. Back Links are important!
